中米のベリーズに生まれ、7歳のときに母親とブルックリンに移住。父親はセントラル・アメリカン・ネイションの元首相副官。15歳の頃、隣人とのトラブル に巻き込まれ、肩をショットガンで撃たれるという悲運に見舞われる。復帰間もなく、たまたま立ち寄った理髪店でドン・プー（フォクシー・ブラウンのプロ デューサー）に出会い、フリースタイルを披露、チャンスをものにする。

争奪戦の末、バッド・ボーイが契約。同レーベルに所属し、凶弾に倒れたノートリアスB.I.G.の後を継ぐラッパーとして、P.ディディーによる”ビギー の再来”というキャッチ・フレーズでデビュー。1999年末、マンハッタンのクラブ・ニューヨークで起こった発砲事件の後、2000年9月にリリースされ たファースト・アルバム『SHYNE』は90万枚のセールスを記録した。
